I was trying to find a method to fix animal specimens, specifically reptiles and small mammals, in a fixative other than formalin; that is to avoid its harmful effects on health and environment and to prevent loss of DNA from specimens. I used to survey literature and museum protocols to find an alternative, but formalin was always mentioned as the fixative agent to be used. One report published in the SPNHC newsletter mentioned some other fixatives that included absolute ethanol which I actually tried out but it’s clearly not working well as specimens are still deteriorating, smelling bad and bleaching. Does anyone have a suggestion of a protocol to fix and preserve such specimens, or can lead me to reference that mentions a fixative agent other than formalin such that it doesn’t affect the external morphology but at the same time preserves DNA?
