This journal is published by an evangelical theological school, Sekolah Tinggi Alkitab Tiranus (Tyrannus Bible Seminary), in Indonesia. We wanted to take this journal to the next level by publishing English articles while still publishing Indonesian articles. This journal is open-access and has been accredited in Indonesia with second-level grades. Pengarah also has been indexed in DOAJ. Title = Does the Bible require that marriage be limited to one man and one woman?
Abstract
Dr. Andreas J. Kostenberger, a prolific Evangelical author and research theologian, makes an informed and eloquent appeal in favor of the “one man, one woman” model of marriage. By examining the text of Gen 2, Kostenberger fastens upon the conclusion that “humans are not free to renegotiate or redefine marriage”; rather, they are “called to preserve and respect what has been divinely instituted.”
Prof. Aaron Milavec, a well-published research theologian with the Wijngaards Catholic Research Institute takes as his starting point Gen 2. He digs deeply into the divinely inspired text and, slowly pealing back the hidden layers, he discovers a much more amazing and divinely authorized set of mandates. For starters, consider the fact that, according to Gen 1, God celebrates his triumph: “God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good” (1:31). In Gen 2:18, however, for the first time, God finds a flaw in his creation: “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper (עֵ֖זֶר ‘ê-zer) as his partner (כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ kə-neḡ-dōw).” Understandably, God has no experience with loneliness. Hence, he has to work closely with adam (his “earthling”) as He begins to cast about for a solution to a problem that He does not entirely understand.
In the end, an amazing set of solutions are uncovered, but they have little to do with definitively “instituting marriage” as Kostenberger imagines. What one finds here is Milavec’s in-depth exploration of Gen 2. The reader is taken on a journey where many of his/her presuppositions regarding Gen 2 are gently overturned. In slow, steady steps, one comes away with a remarkable vision of God as a patient collaborator and as a daring innovator. God’s children, meanwhile, gain confidence that their Father is too resourceful, too respectful, and too compassionate to settle for a “one size fits all” solution to the problems brought to his attention.
