Ammonium iron(II) sulfate hexahydrate
I just received this compound and they write it must be off light and off air, so I should storeit in dark in inert gas atmosphere. I cannot arrange it today, but would really like to open the compound. Is it OK if I seal it with parafilm after opening and start solving this problem after the weekend?
most chemicals come in a darkened bottle, if not just keep in a cupboard away from sunlight.
Inert gas atmosphere, it is always good practice to flush reagent bottles with an inert gas like nitrogen or argon before storing. This will take no more than a few minutes as long as you have the gas source nearby.
The biggest worry for me is usually whether the chemical is hygroscopic
Yes it is fine. The main concern is probaly related to the oxidaton of iron by atmospheric oxygen.
Even if it is not kept under an inert gas, it will still be fine for years if it is tightly closed. You will know it goes bad by the color: the fresh chemical is pale greenish-blue, but if it is oxidized it will go brown.
