Incidentally, we comprehensively overlook the major driver of the nutrient supply chain to plant coming through changes in rhizosphere microbiology, and, the role of plant endophytes in biochemical preparedness of plant to trigger better nutrient use efficiency need due consideration while addressing such an important issue.
Nice question , we debated this issue couple of days only. Feeding the soil is easier but predicting the crop response through either of the two methods of nutrient supply is equallly complex exercise.....

We are feeding the soil to feed the plants. Some time we directly supply via Foliar spray to minimize the losses as losses are more in soil due to various process like fixation, precipitation, immobilization, adsorption, leaching, volatilization, denitrification...
I think it's not feasible to feed the soil... We should try to directly feed the plants wherever possible.
Feeding the soil rather than feeding the plant is very emerging concept now a days and is scientific valid..soil is the media for plant growth and other activities...it is well documented that plants take all the essential inputs and resources from the soil except CO2 and other related inputs which is governed by climate..there are two concepts of plant nutrition like absorption by roots from soil and direct absorption by leaves and other foliage plant part as in foliar spray and riot dipping...major path is by root from the soil after uptake, absorption, translocation and assimilation..there must be appropriate amount of nutrients present in soil so as to ensure uptake..Feeding the soil based on soil supplying capacity, soil texture, soil residual nutrients content viz soil test values, plant requirements satisfying 4R principles for precision application in soil.. application of nutrients in the soil so called feeding of soil is more appropriate techniques for providing nutrients in plants rather than feeding the plant...however foliar application also results in better nutrition when applied nutrients in soil get lost due to so many losses processes..our first priority should be feeding the soil and as required we should go for feeding plants by split application and foliar application of nutrients...
Absolutely, feeding the soil not the plants. In this concept we try and enrich soil's ability to provide nutrients to the plants. I think this is more ecological and organic farming does exactly that. Good discussion point which will trigger useful debate in this area. Best wishes.
