Is it possible to adapt the Farquhar model based on d13C fractioning designed for C3 plants in order to be applied in C4 plants and thus derive the Ci concentration in these plants from this stable isotope?
Probably you meant von Caemmerer and Farquhar gas exchange C3 model given in Planta in the first 80s and c13 AJPP 1982 of Farquhar, o'Leary and Berry. C4 parametrization is also possible, see fig7 and related text in Susanne von Caemmerer Plant, Cell & Environment Vol 36 Issue 9, but there is a variety of C4 types and, within a type, strong CO2 leakage differences with (low) temperature. For well characterized species is then possible to get Cc or Ci with stable isotopes but if there is some leakage or the trend delta-Cc/Ca can be quite an horizontal line. If you use dry matter I wont suggest delta, but under controlled condition and collection of daily sugars or on-line it can work (hard work..)
Thank you very much Dr. Guido Bongi. The conditions to which I want to apply are completely controlled in a phytoclimatic chamber with optimal light a temperature conditions were only the CO2 concentration was manipulated. Since I've applied this relation between 13C and Ci for a C3 plant in the same conditions I want to apply the same principle to a C4 a make the respective comparisons.
in this ase i would suggest to try suboptimal temperature and collect soluble sugars from leaf as in Brugnoli and Ferquhar PP. This would take off cellulose memory and possibly find out some large leakage depending on partial C4 functioning.
