A good starting point would be analysing confirmation bias specifically in academia, as visual representation of data would be affected directly by this phenomenon. Daniele Fanelli published an insightful article about this topic called "Do Pressures to Publish Increase Scientists' Bias? An Empirical Support from US States Data"
Thanks Juan Carlos, I will count on it for next works. By now I am publishing a paper that focus, among others, on this kind of biases and provide some technical solutions to detecting fake pictures with forensic metodologies.
