Why do main effects in a factorial ANOVA have different results compared to when the factors are analysed separately with one-way ANOVAs? For example when I analyse two binary factors separately with one-way ANOVAs, both are significant. When I perform the 2*2 factorial with both of them, only one has a significant main effect. Why is this, is it perhaps simply a loss of power? Any explanation would be welcome.
