@Ravindra, thanks - I have now had time to read it. I found the detailed description about the fact that you are travelling counter to the traffic when you are overtaking almost funny. If I had authored the work, I would have assumed it to be obvious to the readers. Maybe it is not in Texas.

You may find the following resource from work done in our lab useful (see Chapter 5, titled GPS drift characterization using Allan variance analysis). While it doesn't extensively compare different GPS devices, it does provide a reliable methodology to do so via characterization of error sources in such devices.

@Dirk - is it a GPS device being tested, or what has been tested? Is it a GPS placed on an automotive vehicle? I am not sure I understand what you have done, please enlighten me!

@Nicola. In fact, there is a large body of papers regarding the reliability in position and in altitude for studies of the movement of animals. It seems to be a topic more extensively studied that for humans (and vehicles). The crux for us is that for the movement of animals, there is no underlying network they need to conform to. Anyway, many of these animal-related studies provide interesting information about the functioning of GPS.

Hello.  It depends what you mean by reliability. There are various terms used to describe the performance of a navigation system, including reliability, availability, accuracy, integrity, and they often have quite specific meanings. For instance, reliability might be a combination of accuracy and availability, which have to be assessed in different ways. The standard definitions for GPS (using ideas like GDOP) may not actually be sufficient for reliability. You may need to include information about possible system failures, which is much harder to model.
