As a follow-up to this:

I ended up deciding to use ArcGIS and its app Survey123. The app collects spatial data alongside typical survey data (via phone or tablet). Survey123 conducts a number of basic analyses of the data, including of the GPS data in relation to the household data. The downside (as far as I can tell at this moment) is that Survey123 requires internet connectivity for the GIS data. Currently looking into offline options that would be viable for more rural and remote locations.

I found Garmin GPSMAP 64s version is very stable in every types of topography and weather condition. It has stable positional accuracy of 3m. I have used this version for field data collection. Alternatively Garmin Oregon GPS 700 Series types of GPS are also good. They have inbuilt camera.

Another option beside survey 123 , i also suggest you if you try kobotoolbox apps. ODK collect apps. Both can be installed in to your mobile.

If you are interested in some innovative uses from Ethiopia Jan Nyssen has done some really interesting work. He may know of more tourist oriented work. Certainly for all the hiking routes in Ethiopia this would be a very useful tool.
