I have not studied this topic to any practical depth, but, even my surface perusal of the topic informed me that air injection is not the only method. If you consider air injection as a chemical method, then there are other chemical methods including water electrolysis. There are also microbiological methods used to address the same problem. I am sure Research gate has many scholarly papers on the subject.
