The IUCN reintroduction guidelines are clear on the need to assess the risks to the ecosystem at the release site. I am interested in any examples of negative ecological consequences caused by a reintroduction (e.g. predator reintroduction impacting a population of a protected species). Many thanks!

Many thanks Arvind. I am particularly interested in reintroductions, rather than the introduction of invasive non-native species. Hence, the example of wolves causing the extirpation of coyotes in Isle Royale National Park is perfect and fascinating.
Reintroduction of the Mexican Wolf in SW US has not proceeded well in my opinion. I have no references other than newspaper accounts. No major private land owners have volunteered to allow wolves to be released on their properties (i.e. Ted Turner holdings, others) so any livestock predations (sheep) take place on neighboring subsistence ranches or farms. At issue is the amount of space these wolf packs need in order to survive. I cannot see this effort working due to clash between the effort and the residents in the area. Contact SW offices of USF&W and Amer. Assoc. of Zoos and Aquariums--they have an SSP for this species.
