In a lecture from around 1943-46, Karl Polanyi made reference to a lecture held earlier (neither time nor place are given) by the Labour Party politician and economist Evan Durbin. This is what Polanyi has to say about that lecture, which may have been entitled 'Is a better world obtainable?' or 'Is progress towards peace possible?': "Mr Durbin's subject, I gather, was how to achieve social progress, i.e. how to increase wealth and power, while also increasing freedom and kindliness in the community. His answer was that knowledge and good will must be increased and that good will must be made effective - it must possess power. For, in the long run, social progress without peace is not possible".

Does anyone recognize any published or unpublished source which corresponds to this in some fashion? Alternatively, is there an archive for Durbin's writings where it might be possible to find the lecture to which Polanyi refers?
