In what ways can the integration of AI in education influence the evaluation of EFL students' assessments, and what changes are required to be followed in the AI-based evaluation process?
By providing automated scoring and immediate feedback, AI-based evaluation promotes timely, personalized feedback. also, adjusting the difficulty of test questions based on students’ responses provides a more accurate assessment of their language skills and ensures the appropriateness of the evaluation for each learner. Impressive though this may seem, it does not always work like a Swiss watch! AI systems must be constantly updated, trained, and calibrated with diverse datasets to ensure they can accurately assess students from different backgrounds and proficiency levels, ensuring fair evaluations and minimizing biases. Above all, it should be integrated with existing pedagogical practices to enhance the overall learning experience. It should not always replace human-based evaluation.
I think students depend on AI applications in doing their tasks, preparing their presentations and writing their essays. In such a case, it is useless to evaluate the students' production using traditional methodologies which means we evaluate the AI applications' creativity, not the students' performance. So there must be updated evaluation strategies which focus on students' real outputs. For example, instructors are recommended to tell their students about the ethics of using AI in their learning process. Students should be aware and instructors should be rigid about detecting students' production using plagiarism detectors. The second technique is that instructors enquire their students to discuss their presentation showing us what have they done, what elements are used, and how the argument is developed. In writing, it is useless to focus on grammar correctness and vocabulary choice. Instructors may ask students to identify the components of the essay and how the students make them linked. Finally, instructors may test students to perform any task spontaneously at the classroom.
AI and assessment: Rethinking assessment strategies and supporting students in appropriate use of AI
"Traditional assessment methods often fall short in capturing students’ true abilities and fostering authentic learning experiences, and the introduction of AI (artificial intelligence) tools further complicates the task of accurately assessing genuine student learning.
This article will provide a brief explanation of what generative artificial intelligence is, and will consider what types of assessment it can support and where it can hinder assessment. Details about how AI can be incorporated into assessments when it is appropriate will be provided, and suggestions for how assessments can be developed to reduce the likelihood of AI being used when its use is not appropriate will also be included..."
Artificial Intelligence for Student Assessment: A Systematic Review
"Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being implemented in more and more fields, including education. The main uses of AI in education are related to tutoring and assessment. This paper analyzes the use of AI for student assessment based on a systematic review. For this purpose, a search was carried out in two databases: Scopus and Web of Science...
It is clear from the studies analyzed that, in most of them, the pedagogy underlying the educational action is not reflected. Similarly, formative evaluation seems to be the main use of AI. Another of the main functionalities of AI in assessment is for the automatic grading of students. Several studies analyze the differences between the use of AI and its non-use. We discuss the results and conclude the need for teacher training and further research to understand the possibilities of AI in educational assessment, mainly in other educational levels than higher education. Moreover, it is necessary to increase the wealth of research which focuses on educational aspects more than technical development around AI..."
