For the students to learn actively online during the pandemic, they must understand certain Terms and how to use some Tools for learning to be meaningful. What are your contributions on this ?
I agree. Students need to be given an orientation or practice session for the teachers deliver a smooth teaching in online class. Not only an orientation/practices sessions, but teachers also need to enforce a certain habit in an online decorum as simple as raising hands and waiting names to be called before speaking.
I believe our practices during in-person instruction are about the same.
I call it The Class contract. I do this on the 1st day, 1st week of the semester.
In an in-person class contract, we discuss our agreement on class etiquette. Whereas in our online class, we discuss our class netiquette. It can include, respect each other, what can be accepted/tolerated, and what must be avoided.
Since some might not be familiar with buttons and clicks, thus we should have a simple mock session with them. Audio check, camera check, lighting check...and... action! This should reduce anxiety, nervousness, etc, perhaps for the instructors too. Preparing students' readiness is a must-do in the new learning environment, thus creating a safer learning setting for all.
I agree...this is one very important element at the orientation stage. How to use and navigate different online learning tools and sites builds their confidence and thus ensures participation during the learning process.
Some students are deterred by the thought of speaking and having their video online. They can be reassured by being advised that they can/should turn their video off and do not have to speak. They can type their question or response in the chat function.
Aside from orientation, which most of us normally do during the first day, it is advised that we do a user's manual. The only downside is we must update the manual every 3 months.
Zoom lessons should be well organized and integrated with some relevant tasks where students are made to do them and be expected to do reflections based on their accomplishments. So, transactions among students and between a teacher and students should be made as a means to enhance student involvement..
Thank you all for your contributions. The challenges of power supply, internet access, the appropriate strategies änd many others may still make students not to be actively engaged via zoom.
This is good! However, aside from providing guide from time to time, a consideration on internet connectivity for the involved learners must be identified.
First, they must have an orientation class on this, Secondly, they should be encouraged to engage with the zoom lecture using non-verbal methods like zoom chat, breakout room discussions despite the connectivity/other issues they are having.
