How long does it take to a journal indexed in the "Emerging Sources Citation Index" get an Impact Factor? What is the future of journals indexed in Emerging Sources Citation Index?
I would be grateful if someone could provide me with any information about questions below.
-When it will be the first evaluation of the indexed journals in the ESCI (Emerging Sources Citation Index) to a possible transference to SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded)?
-Is it possible those journals indexed in ESCI (since 2015) will be included to SCIE in 2018 and, consequently, included to JCR (Journal Citation Reports), receiving an impact factor in 2018?
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
From what I understand, journals indexed in ESCI do not get an impact factor until they are moved into Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) or Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). There is no defined timeline for when they get to move into SSCI/SCIE, because ESCI evaluation is timed according to Clarivate Analytics' priorities for expanding database coverage.
there is no time limit. both ESCI and SCI are released by Thomson Reuters. since the number of journals coming up are increasing day by day, therefore they are keeping levels of gradations in quality. it is their discretion when they shift from ESCI to SCI. it all depends on the annual quality report of the journal. the journal h-index, its citations etc..
The ESCI are already in the SCIE database, but you can differentiate them from impact are factor journals by that that they do not have a link to their impact factor and disciplinary affiliation and other types of information. Actually, these journals are on trial, and they have to conform to certain criteria to be fully accepted to the SCIE with an impact factor. One criterion is citations threshold. The length of time it takes to have an impact factor depends on the journal's performance.
ESCI is a good start to improve journal quality, but not for measure IF. Both - journal future and IF depend on different factors - the article subject, the existence of other similar works, language, visibility and access to the article, among others.
