The FTIR and Raman spectra of the polystyrene (PS) / C₇₀ fullerene system show characteristic peaks from both components. The presence of C₇₀ can cause shifts or intensity changes in some peaks due to intermolecular interactions.

1. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) Spectroscopy

Polystyrene (PS) Main Peaks:

• 3025–3000 cm⁻¹ → C–H stretching (aromatic ring)
• 2920 & 2850 cm⁻¹ → C–H stretching (aliphatic)
• 1600 & 1492 cm⁻¹ → C=C stretching (aromatic)
• 1450 cm⁻¹ → CH₂ bending
• 1020–700 cm⁻¹ → C–H out-of-plane bending (aromatic ring, fingerprint region)

C₇₀ Fullerene Main Peaks:

• 1429 cm⁻¹ → C=C stretching (fullerene cage)
• 1183 cm⁻¹ → C–C skeletal vibration
• 750–500 cm⁻¹ → Fullerene breathing modes

Effects of C₇₀ in FTIR:

• Some C=C and C–H peaks in PS may shift or weaken due to interactions with C₇₀.
• New fullerene-specific peaks appear in the 500–1500 cm⁻¹ region.

2. Raman Spectroscopy

Polystyrene (PS) Main Peaks:

• 3050 cm⁻¹ → C–H stretching (aromatic)
• 1600 cm⁻¹ → C=C stretching (aromatic ring)
• 1000 cm⁻¹ → Ring breathing mode

C₇₀ Fullerene Main Peaks:

• 1567 cm⁻¹ (Ag mode) → C=C stretching
• 1429 cm⁻¹ (Ag mode) → Cage vibration
• 1172 cm⁻¹ & 1069 cm⁻¹ → Radial breathing modes
• 750–400 cm⁻¹ → Low-frequency cage vibrations

Effects of C₇₀ in Raman:

• Strong fullerene peaks dominate due to its high Raman activity.
• Polystyrene peaks may shift slightly or decrease in intensity.

Conclusion:

• FTIR: C₇₀ introduces new C=C and cage vibration peaks in the 500–1500 cm⁻¹ region.
• Raman: C₇₀ dominates with strong peaks at 1567, 1429, and 1172 cm⁻¹, affecting PS peak intensities.
