never experienced this problem. The biofilm should not be floating but adhered to the walls of the culture vessle. I wonder if your culture vessel was not clean or something wrong with the growth media.
You should not be too worried - it is possible to have 'floaters' or air-liquid interface biofilms that are not attached at the meniscus to the vial walls (See the attached paper). If you use larger vials (e.g. 30 ml Universals) it is possible to measure total growth (OD600), attachment levels using crystal violet, as well as biofilm strength with glass balls. If you include the right controls, it is possible to differentiate between biofilm growth at the meniscus that is only attached to the vial, attached biofilms going out across the air-liquid interface, and non-attached floaters.
