Farmers are the creators........ Creator-producers of food for all. From our breakfast to dinner. But they are probably the most neglected ones. Media focusses on artists, scientists, industrialists, social reformers, political persons,...........!
Farmers are never glorified (not even in history).
Now, in many countries, the issue of doubling the farmers' income has been taken into account by the governments. Many seminars, meetings, global meets are being organised, money is being spent to make it a global slogan.
But what's the baseline income to double? What socioeconomic status are the benchmark?
Some of them are not having the bare minimum to just live a normal life with all normal requirement for a person.
Can mere "doubling the income" do the justice?
Even if the answer is YES......
Considering all our sincere efforts and good gestures for doing the same......
Is it still a DREAM or at least a near-future REALITY?
It may be a
reality, if the following two changes in the present condition are performed.
1. Insurance of ALL cultivation and so on ALL agricultural loans,
2. REMOVAL of ALL middlemen in the area of marketing of agricultural produces.

Doubling of farmers income will remain dream unless they are properly trained for the widespread use of biofertilizers in place of chemical fertilizers. In fact, indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers to enhance the yield of crops has lead to decline in soil fertility.
The solution is not publicized by government agencies only. The solution will not come from outside the organizational or structural units of farmers. Their solidarity and formation of organized associations and framed by laws supported by governmental and civil authorities will not know one of their problems unless they unite in associations that raise their issues impartially.
Sir, if one looks at average income of a farmer, there is hardly any income addition. Since 2015, India has suffered several drought, unexpected rains & several crop loss issues & when it comes to bumper harvest, the prices crashed majorly, particularly in potatoes & onions. So naturally ,neither does a farmer have any capital to invest nor can he risk himself of going back to agriculture.So, I belief the scheme " Doubling farmers' income" will take several years from now to fulfill it's target....
It is not correct to link the problems of farmers to technology or climate change alone. They may have some impacts but the major reasons are related to WTO’s Agreement on Agriculture (AoA). In the current WTO regime, unless some proactive steps are taken, it would be very difficult to double farmers’ income. Under the AoA, member countries are expected to have restrictions on market access, domestic subsidies, and export subsidies. You can imagine what does happen to our poor farmers’ products, if they are subjected open competition, without having domestic support.
AoA considers domestic support (subsidies) as trade distorting or non-trade distorting. For trade distorting subsidies, the WTO sets limit beyond that member countries are not supposed to give support. Domestic subsidies are usually assigned colours, Green Box, Blue Box and Amber Box (AMS). Green Box subsidies do not cause trade distortion, and therefore, do not have any reduction commitments. Examples include direct payments to producers, which are fully decoupled from production. Other examples are income guarantee and security programmes (natural disasters, state financial contributions to crop insurance, etc.); programmes aimed at adjusting structures and environmental protection programmes, regional development programmes, etc.
Blue box supports are subsidies that are linked to programmes, which limit production by imposing production quotas or requiring farmers to set aside part of their land. It covers payments directly linked to area or number of animals (reduction). The blue box measures are also exempt from reduction commitments.
The amber box (Aggregate Measurement of Support, AMS) represents trade distorting domestic support measures. AMS is the annual level of support provided for an agricultural product to the producers (product specific) and non-product specific support provided to all farmers in general. Examples include subsidies on inputs such as fertilizers, electricity, irrigation, seeds, and credit. In India, the price support given as Minimum Support Prices is an amber box subsidy.
In most developed countries, agricultural subsidies are of green and blue box types, which do not have any reduction commitments. Unfortunately, in India, we rely too much on amber box subsides which always have restrictions.
It can be reality when we deal with agriculture as an industry by using more modern technology.
It can become a reality, but it needs persistence and consistence :
- Persistent efforts from both the farmers and the policymakers to support them,
- Consistently using research and higher technologies to make the farmers profit more from their investments.
A great aspiration indeed! At present it appears to be a mere propaganda. It has also not spelled out what category of farmers to be considered. Marginal farmers or those who are already making good earning? Many issues are involved as stated above and thus good homework is necessary to make this aspiration a reality.
Farmers are the salt of the land. Their culture, and economic activities are vitally important. They are very vulnerable due to the lack of resources, protection from bureaucracy and criminals, and government attention.
Smart people and local and central governments began turning this into a write direction. Hopefully, it's not gonna be too late.
It possible to doubling farmers income. I will explain this with taking a example of paddy/Ragi/wheat. This is possible only when the government are stop to distributing free of cost to some people/family. in some state every month ~30kg of rice/ragi/wheat they are distributing free of cost for people. This distribution will happen on the basis of government has to buy ~40 ruppes per KG and they are distributing free. If they fix minimum sale amount double that will burden for government budget. Because of this reason either state or central government are not ready to make minimum sale price is double. They are playing with farmers life. In India both the state and central government are fail to fix farmers sale price! This is our badluck in India. Every year in Karnataka ~ 4000 farmers are attempting suciding because of no profit in farming. If this situation continue another 10year, India has to import all the agricultural crops like a petroleum products. This will be true in some cases.
I am excited to see some other reply/answers regarding this.
May be reality but continue support of all the pillers i.e. Farmers, scientist, extension agents and govt are needed to achieve the target.
Vission is broad and atleast staretgy documents prepared on time and now it is the job of all of us to make the dream come true. One who prepared the document knows how much efforts it need to put on. I was invilved with J and K document and it is rally a hard deal. Hope for the best out of it
It can become a reality if others people realise the fact i.e, the importance of farmers on civilization.

Agricultural is confronting with so many challenges. Policies and their implementation, deep-rooted corruption in service delivery, no effective contingency plan for bad weather, poor farm credit system, ineffective crop insurance, high input cost, poor market access, traders dominated markets, lack of warehousing and storage facilities, discouraging minimum support price, among various factors have played crucial role in pushing Indian agriculture into distress. Doubling farmers income would require to address all these distressing factors.
