I really don't like and I consider useless and confusing the lists of research types I found. They use no classification criterion. Maybe this is why I could not find two identical lists... They put together grounded theory, phenomenological research, ethnography, narrative research, survey, content analysis etc. I often wonder what is the list about? About methods used, about methodology employed, about theory, about paradigms etc.?
I know a research type list could hardly be exhaustive and I am not looking for that. But could it at least be composed according to some classification criterion? For example research types according to research objectives: descriptive research, explanatory research etc.; or to types of data mostly used: visual research, narrative research etc.; or according to theoretical approach it employs: phenomenological research, ethnomethodological research etc.
I think a proper classification must also generate mutual exclusive categories like the research is either phenomenological or ethnomethodological. Certainly a research could be classified according to different criterion like a phenomenological research could be also a grounded theory study.
What do you think? What classification do you use? What is your list of research designs?
Thank you!
