Does the order of authors have any meaning or importance in (books) written by multiple authors?

Does the difference between a first, a second author and a third (or last) author in a journal article apply as well in books produced by two, three,... authors?

I think the first author is the one who made the most contribution, the last author is instructor, and the other order are not important (in Viet Nam).
