I am doing a time series analysis of land use and cover change using The Terra Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Level 1 Precision Terrain Corrected Registered At-Sensor Radiance (AST_L1T) images, however, I have never used ASTER datasets before.
I read that the ASTER level B requires cross-talk correction before I can use them for my analysis. I also read that the AST_L1T is a combination of both Levels A and B.
I would like to find out if I need to run Cross talk corrections for my images before I can use them. Does this then mean that I separate the bands and run the crosstalk for the VNIR bands alone?
As you mentioned, the AST_L1T product is a combination of Level 1A and 1B, and it includes radiometric and geometric corrections. The cross-talk effect is a systematic error that affects the Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR) bands of the ASTER sensor. However, the cross-talk effect is corrected in the AST_L1T product, and thus there is no need to perform cross-talk correction again on the VNIR bands of AST_L1T images obtained from USGS Earth Explorer. In general, cross-talk correction is required only for Level 1B ASTER data. If you had Level 1B data, you would need to separate the VNIR bands and apply the cross-talk correction on the VNIR bands only.
Therefore, for your analysis using AST_L1T images obtained from USGS Earth Explorer, you can use the data without performing additional crosstalk correction. However, it is always good to review the metadata of the AST_L1T product to confirm if crosstalk correction has already been applied to the data.
