Santander in Spain, Europe, is the best and most advanced model. I am sure there are many cities that have smart city concept integrated to a certain extent, but Santander is a spearhead for this concept. In Barcelona they have expo called Smart City every year and I would suggest visiting it to get up to date information, firsthand.
Thank you very much for your inputs... they are very welcomed and interesting. I knew about Songo - but its example is way different then anything else (same goes to Masdar to some extent).
I will look closely at the other examples / projects and if I ll have any more questions I'll come back to you!
Hi,I participated in the project -"Future Cities - Porto living lab" ( Portugal). The funded part of it oficially ended last October, but a lot of real projects are following some ideas and investments, with the envolvement of the Municipality, University and some entrepeneurs, startups... etc. You may like to see some more at: http://futurecities.up.pt/site/. Best, Paula
Hi there Niklaas. By my knowledge Vienna is one of the most developed european city in terms of e-gov (so we might extend that to Smart Cities as well)... Thank you very much... I will study it and add it to my list for best practices! All the best!
You can find some good smart city projects by following this link: http://www.smartcities.at/home-en-us/
Here you will find all the Austrian projects for developing cities and urban regions, that have been funded (since 2010) by the Smart Cities initiative of the Climate and Energy Fund.
One that I find particularly interesting is iENERGY 2.0. It says on the website that "the aim of this project is the conspicuous anticipation of this vision in the form of individual demonstration projects", giving as examples "the public visualization of visionary energy solutions in the context of smart cities or smart urban regions, renewable energy" and so on. The use of information technologies, which can also be innovative, is fundamental in developing an energy consciousness in the individuals' minds so that, starting from that point, the region will be able to become a smart city, with pleased citizens and, therefore, represent a good case for other cities to consider.
Thank you very much Andreea! Under the link you gave me I found a lot of quality information! Now I only need time to gather all this into a single file!
You're welcome! Indeed, there are plenty of interesting ideas for the development of cities. In Romania, I read somewhere that some cities have been implementing some similar projects. I don't know if you are aware of Brasov city and its app especially created for promoting the interaction between the public administration and the citizens... of course using IT&C! :)
Hi Ivan. Thank you very much for your answer. In Romania we also have a conference on the topic of Smart cities - this year in december will be the fourth edition - thats why I m so keen to find out more about this subject.
Indeed Andreea, Brasov city in Romania is, together with Piatra Neamt and of course the Romanian capital - Bucharest... very well developed in this respect. But... still a lot to work on the area!!
HI. In Malaysia, there is Smart City development called Iskandar Malaysia, which is located at the south of the Peninsular, which is near Singapore. Some interesting initiatives and programmes going on there, as we adopt the Smart City concept to suit the local conditions. Hope this helps!
Australia is a large Island Continental country with a population of 24 million, so its important to manage and utilize our resources effectively. Many cities have invested heavily in water management, renewable energy, public transport and bike lanes to promote a new way of life. Here are some example,
We have recently concluded a study in which we have in depth analysed several best cases of smart cities at EU and worldwide level. The beneficiary of this study is the EU Commission (DG ENER) and the title is: "Analysing the potential for wide scale roll out of integrated Smart Cities and Communities solutions". You may ask to Mr Jens Bartholmes of DG Ener ([email protected]) if and when this study will be available for the large public. Regards, Stefano.
See "Future Cities - Porto Living lab" in Portugal. The city goes on a "smart mood", even after the project ended last year. Several startups were born (like "Veniam", for instance) and more than 400 Buses with mobile connection and sensors collecting data around the city and at the harbour, specialdepartment created by the mayor and the connections with universities remain very active and with a generally positive impact.
