Reading is a good solution to stress and depression. However, it also matters on what to read and where one obtains that reading material. Reading laughing stories that brings back the mind, do help a lot in fighting depression. Jokes and cartoons are on the front list in solving depression issues. Therefore, it is the quality of what is being read, that helps on depression issues. And also the suitability of the material to match the emanation of the said depression.
Dear @Renzo and all, you are correct that major depression needs medical treatment and counselling. The sad thing is that depression is on the rise in many societies, one of which is my own community, even among my own students. Supportive family and friends are really gems in such times.

It depends how depressed the individual is. If they are severely depressed they may not be able to be motivated to read. It depends on the motivation. Renzo Bianchi noted this in his answer as well. It is important to include the patient in deciding what therapy the patient wishes to participate in before making it part of the treatment. Compliance is important.
