There is quite substantial literature on the Open Access citation advantage. However, that focuses exclusively on sharing journal articles. I wonder if there is any additional effect by sharing early versions of papers, e.g. as preprint or working paper. Of course you would need to look at citations to the various versions (preprint plus regular journal article) and add them up. Do you have any leads on evidence or research into this?
I do know there is evidence for the High Energy Physics Field (https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/0906/0906.5418.pdf), but wonder if there is evidence in other fields as well.
You are correct that there is not a lot of evidence out there, but look at Figure 2 in the paper attached... you can see that papers (pre-print) archived in ArXiv do substantially better in terms of citation rates. Not sure that this is well controlled, but this is the only answer that I know of! All the best, ATP
Sharing articles in the press is very favorable in terms of citations because it allows the manuscript to be seen for a longer time without waiting until the final publication published in the journal.
@ Andrew Townsend Peterson: thanks, yes, that was the paper I already linked to as well. I wonder however about the other fields that also have a preprint/working paper tradition, e.g. mathematics but also social science and economics with SSRN and working paper series indexed in Repec respectively.
