Surgeons do surgery. From the NEJM and NY Times come startling findings of surgeon to surgeon skill differences having marked influence on patient outcomes. Lowest quartile relative to upper quartile of skilled surgeons had significantly higher mortality, readmission and complication rates, longer lengths of stay, longer time in surgery on average, and more returns to surgery.
