There are several papers describing different hydro-metallurgical purification routes of Metallurgical Si to Solar Si through alloying, doping, nano sized grinding,... and finally leaching in various acidic solution. Does anybody know if there is commercial scale (or pilot scale) purification of MG-Si to Solar Si somewhere in the world through hydro-metallurgy route?
Arman Seyyedi Study the phase diagram of Si and O. This tells you that high temperatures and lots of energy are required to reduce SiO2 to Si. Thus the affinity of Si for O is very great and hydro-metallurgical routes (i.e. involving aqueous systems) are thermodynamically unfavored.
Thank you Alan, however you got incorrect idea from my question. My question is about purification of mg-Si (purity ~ 99.5%) to solar Si (purity~99.9999% , P+B~1 ppm) and not about reduction of SiO2 to Si.
