Does Guanidin Thiocyanate inhibit PCR?

I used 5.5M Guanidin Thiocyanate during soil DNA extraction to get rid of humic substances. The solution was clear, after extraction, so it seems to work for humic substance removal. However, does Guanidin Thiocyanate itself provide the problem that PCR reaction might be inhibited. Nanodrop resulted in low ratios for A260/A230. Can anyone give me some advice?

Dear Laurence, thank you soo much about your detailed and valuable reply. I will try to improve my 260/230 ratio by adding ethanol and re applying it to the colum. As I intend to ship my samples for PCR for metagenome analysis I really need to clean them up otherwise it is a waste of money if the PCR fails. Thanks
