This is by no means an unambiguous area. The effects, positive or negative, depend on such variables as how the comments are made, the nature of the educational setting and very importantly gender. Boys are far more likely to be negatively impacted by compliments on intelligence than girls - teachers pet, suck-up, etc. Sports are the valued currency of young males. And no child, at a young age, male of female, should be told he or she is a genius (whatever that is).

Hi Salem, I think as long as praise is given equally, then this should never really become a problem. Much of the time children are often rewarded for 'participating' or are told that their work is 'excellent' when indeed it is not. Teachers often praise children in the wrong way, so that those that do show real promise often never know it, and those that are perhaps slower or even handicapped learners are always told they are doing a great job. It's all about striking balance in my experience (as a teacher).

If you treat each student as an individual, you can strike a rapport and professional relationship with them so that they can gain your professional trust - from here they will likely listen to advice you provide them with - be this praise, or from the perspective of "let's look at how we can make your efforts even better".

I agree with Douglas (above) in the idea that nobody should be calling any child a genius, as this will inevitably make those that are not being referred to as genius's feel negatively towards those that are.

Dear Salem,

As a psychologist, I do not think much of awarding gifted children in front of their classmates.

While awarding gifted children in front of their classmates, we are conveying the idea that they are geniuses in miniature. Accordingly, we are still reinforcing the idea that they are superior to their classmates and, to some extent, spoiling them.

.

While awarding gifted children in front of their classmates, are introducing an element of discrimination into the system. It is not a mere coincidence that gifted children are often isolated children.

While awarding gifted children in front of their classmates, we are hindering the sense of competence in these classmates.

If gifted children are to be rewarded, they shoud be rewarded in the absense of their classmates. I even wonder whether to reward gifted children is not, to an extent, to kill, as it were, their intrinsic curiosity.
