The Mediterranean basin has long been a site of temperate fruit and nut production. Currently, new agricultural cultures like pistachio (Pistacia vera), a small tree originating from Central Asia and the Middle East, and Opuntia ficus-indica, a species of cactus that has long been a domesticated crop plant in Southern Europe, became plants with interest for large-scale production.
