MBBR technology employs thousands of polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated basin of wastewater treatment plants. Each individual bio carrier increases productivity through providing protected surface area to support the growth of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within its cells. Does anyone knows the ideal thickness of biofilms in biocarriers?
The biofilm thickness depend on the water being treated, carrier type, agitation used etc.
The time to establish the biofilm mainly depend on the water being treated.
The ideal thickness depend on the parameter and purpose of the treatment (BOD removal, nitrification, denitrification...).

Ideal biofilm thickness in MBBR is 3mm as recorded in various literature. It will take 2 to 3 weeks for build-up of ideal thickness layer with proper reactor operation conditions.

Thank you for your contribution. But I need a practical answer for my work. The build-up of biofilm layer depends on various factors such as inlet wastewater characteristics, temperature, proper feeding, and etc. In a real situation, it takes 35-60 days for build-up the effective biofilm for municipal wastewater.

My colleagues are working for a pvt. firm where they have employed MBBR and they are treating domestic sewage. The information they have conveyed is, 20 days needed for ideal biofilm development in the reactor.

As I know the thickness of the biofilm depends on different operating parameters and properties of water being treated, such as temperature, treatment time, agitation rate and type, etc.
