I'm working on a final project for my Intermediate GIS course on creating a map that shows feeding areas in Southeast Alaska for Humpback Whales. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can access data that would reference these areas (ie. migration patterns, fish abundance specifically herring and krill etc.) Any help is greatly appreciated!

As I know, relevant studies might be scarce in those remote areas. I used to learn something about traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). With this subject, you find data from visiting local areas, interviewing traditional farmers, and searching historical records. It seems weird, but is really useful and necessary. Maybe you can have a try.

Contact Dr. Andrew Szabo at the Alaska Whale Foundation...they have a Facebook page. Andy has been studying the humpbacks of SE AK for years. I had him as a professor at Univ of AK SE a few years ago. They have volunteer positions available in the summer. Good luck! -Diana
Also, check with Jan Straley in Sitka. She has been the foremost whale researcher in SE AK for years. She is with Univ of AK SE Sitka.
