I am looking for studies that compared magnitude of ERP effect in the first and second half of the experiment, to see if there was a reduction (or increase) of the effect over time. For example, a larger N400 effect to semantic anomalies in the first half of the experiment and a weaker effect in the second half.
I only know of this one: Koelsch & Jentschke (2008_Brain Research 1212:55-62). They found a reduced harmonic unexpectancy effect in ERP over the course of an experiment.
I do know that ERP effects can diminish over an experiment. But Alpha can get stronger, so experiments tend to last no more than one hour (half an hour with children). repeating the same stimulus will certainly create repetition effects for the N400, that is a reduced N400 after more than one repetition (seen in Kutas et al 200)
There are some papers about adaptation and habituation effects on some erps but mainly on very basic issues. In an experiment using japanese symbols we accidently found a "non-semantic" learning effect (or an effect of repetition) revealed in the topography of a P-100-like component.
