I excavated the remains of several dogs from the entrance passage of the chambered cairn at Point of Cott on Westray in Orkney {Barber, 1997}, with some radiocarbon dates associated.

I have excaved a site located on the Southern Portugal in Serpa, called Alto de Brinches 3 that belonged to a larger settlement of what in spain they call  «poblado de hoyos»,

and in one of the pits, a large one, i found a series of animals depositions, among them there were to dogs liyng like they were quietly sleeping.

I excavated a complete dog burial in a Late Iron Age oit within a parge pit group. Avoid in the base of the pit (which, from memory, was c. 0.80m deep) may have been a post setting (Tabor 2008, 136-8).

An MIA pit outside Battlesbury hillfort (Ellis et al. 2008, 17) produced a partial dog skeleton - and some deposits of dog at Danebury were regarded as ritual in nature (Cunliffe 1995, 51-3). I recently came a upon a publication showing several dogs in one (IA I think) pit but cannot remember where at the moment.

In Sakhalin island (Russia) several dogs bones and sculls were found in the medieval sites (7-13 cc AD) such as Ozyorsk or Susuya. Some of'em were certainly killed for food. I myself found a dog scull inside a pottery vessel of 11-13 cc.AD., possibly it was a part of ceremonial food (Novo Yeniseyskoe site). In the central Sakhalin in the site of Promyslovoye, the ceremonial burial of a dog was found (7 c AD).

In British prehistory I know only the finds from Windmill Hill, Grime’s Graves and Staines Road Farm sites dated in Neolithic.

I assume you have completed your dissertation by now, but in case anyone else is interested in the topic, there is a reply to the Dark article mentioned above: Rick J. Schulting and Michael P. Richards, (2009). Dogs, divers, deer and diet. Stable isotope results from Star Carr and a response to Dark. Journal of Archaeological Science, 36 (2), 498-503.  This also considers the Seamer Carr dog along with the two from Star Carr - the only Mesolithic examples as far as I know. 

I would have thought the best source in the future for this kind of question will be the Historic England zooarchaeology regional reviews.

No my dissertation was an independent piece of research. Why?

Pat Shipman, 2015 (The invaders) focuses on your question, but in an older context (the Sapiens arriving to Europa and facing Neanderthals). For example, she says that there is a marked rise in the number of wolf bones in human sites after wolf-dogs appear. I think wolves (which are, of course, territorial) were deliberately targeted by humans in order to protect the wolf-dogs.

@Teresa Bejarano Fernández interesting I'll look up the paper. For Neo/BA Britain I only came across I bone which was wolf-sized.

There is a theory that wolves domesticated themselves. At least partially. Perhaps the bones are the aggressive animal's killed as you say to protect the less aggressive animal's?

I only have a fossilised astragalus bone found loose on the Suffolk coast. Not sure if wolf or dog. Is it possible to differentiate on size?

Hi @Andrew Richmond is the astraguls a stone fossil? If so I'd guess it is old but I don't know time frames for fossilisation to happen.

The size range of modern dogs overlap with foxes & wolves as it has since the Roman period. If we knew what period your specimen was from it might be possible to suggest it is more likely to be fox, dog or wolf.

Do you know the measurements of your bone- Bd, Dd, GLl & GLm?

Hi @Justin Ayers. Sorry wasn't awake enough when I replied to you. Fossil age likely to be 2-3 million years (Red Crag) so massively pre-dates domestication. Too big for fox. GLl= 48mm, GLm= 46mm, Bd= 36mm, D=21mm. Missing distal and medial edges but mostly intact. Guessing Wolf then...
