I'm studying Porto (Portugal) traditional buildings, which present similar aspects (narrow and long shape) with the North European Port cities (Coasts of Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, UK). I'm specially interested in the typology similar to Amsterdam traddional buildings.
Perhaps you can see also other examples far from the North, such as Cadiz (see books of Teodoro Falcon). Even the American and Asian ports (with low traditional buildings) can be a good point for comparison. About this last part, you can see some answers in my publications.

Joachim, traditional buildings are not exactly my specialty. I do know the development of traditional buildings in amsterdam is well documented in Dutch literature. You will to check out authors such as Henk Zandkuijl and Rudlof Meischke. Pretty old school stuff, but very thorough and still very relevant. Most of their publications are in Dutch, but there are publications in English that refer to these authors and confer their cental message of the transformation from the medieval wooden house to stone houses.
