Central marine Fisheries Research Institute - Kochy has a bulletin on Lobster Fishery in India.Though lobster resources are found in all maritime states, catches from Tamil Nadu & Gujarat are more than in other states. Most of the catch in Tamil Nadu is carried out by either trawlers, bottom set trap boxes, scoop nets & tethered long line.In case of bottom set trap boxes, some weight is attached at the bottom,so that it stays in place & the traps are placed near the openings of rocky crevices. The inside of the box has 2 series of fyke net type arrangements & the 5 sides of the trap is covered by nets & one side is open.A bait like Green mussel,is usually kept in the trap box & kept near rock crevices overnight, which is then checked for lobster the next day. After the catch is emptied,it is again reset with the live bait. In the scoop net type of lobster catch,a Nangura Chunda (local name for lobster catch gear) which has curved cycle spokes pointed at one end which opens out & the other end is tied to a smooth triangular stone is used.Usually a live bait like Nereis,Crab is fixed into the points end of the hook. The Polyamide string tied to the hook is held almost tight by fisherman sitting in his boat. The Nangura Chunda is kept near the rocky area & when a lobster tries to nibble at the bait,it is felt by the fisherman's index finger & he then very slowly lifts the gear.As he does this, the lobster is still nibbling at the bait.In this way, the lobster is made to come up to the surface of the water & then it is scooped by a scoop net by the fisherman. In this way, he catches lobster live- which fetches better returns. In case of tethered long line, the type of snare is almost as in scoop method, but the difference is as the lobster is found to nibble at the bait, the hook is suddenly pulled,so that the spoke impinges into the body of lobster & then it is taken out.
Lobster aquaculture:
Lobster seeds are a bycatch in Dol nets, stationery stake nets & impoundments in Gujarat.Seeds size ranges from 0.5 inch to 3 inches & are aquacultured in small natural rocky depressions along the Mahuva coast in Bhavnagar district in Gujarat. These depressions are in the rocky intertidal zone & once seeds are released, the depression is covered with used & old nets,so that they do not escape during high tide. They are cultured uoto the time each one makes up to 100 gms, which is then marketed to processing factories. It usually takes 5 to 6 months for their culture. Seeds of lobster are got only in the months of Nov to February in this place.
Fishermen in Nagapattinam do catch lobsters weighing almost 5 to 6 kgs. each & fetach a good value for its export in live condition.
