We published an article in JoVE and I'm now an associate editor for JoVE Behavior. We found publishing there to be very useful for our protocols which are much easier to understand through video than text. You have plenty of time and space to clearly explain protocols. Even without an impact factor, the increased visibility for your lab and other publications are likely to make publishing in JoVE worthwhile. Our article has been a great resource to share with others. As Lawrence suggested, the objective was to share our protocol with others in the hopes that more labs would use similar methods. I can check on the status of efforts to get an impact factor. Feel free to contact me with any specific questions, and I'd be happy to answer questions here.

I've never published there - but they keep asking for articles. I think part of the reason they keep asking is the rather steep publication costs. I do like this journal, in general. I have found some nice short method papers that helped clarify our approaches in Drosophila. That being said, I don't think the top labs publish here. Maybe that isn't such a bad thing, really, since the articles tend to be sincere efforts to convey information about techniques to the scientific community.

As to your query - I really don't think it matters, but we have a "Neuroscience" subscription and we are able to find most of what we need.

We recently published two Articles with JoVE. I would definitely agree that its not a top journal (As stated by Lawrence). However, I also agree with Benjamin in saying that it is the perfect place for methodological articles. I think that JoVE needs a little time to grow still and that opportunities to publish are currently the best option to pursue. I do find useful articles, but I don't know if subscription costs are quite worth the quality of articles just yet. Instead, I might just contact the authors directly to inquire about useful techniques published on JoVE. Clearly they are already interested in sharing them.

Thanks a lot for your answers. I do share your enthusiastic views on sharing the protocols and methods a lab uses. I also found some free articles - although not exactly from my field - very compelling and a vivid way to see how others are actually "doing" stuff in the lab. It's a great venue.

Benjamin, as an editor for the Behavior section I would have one question: on the webpage I only found 41 results in the complete section. Is this gonna raise soon, as it is a complete new category? The first one was published in mid 2013, right? For instance "Neuroscience" started 2010 and now has >450. Could that be supposed for Behavior as well?

I have not published in this article. Like in the saying ''pictures speak  thousand words'' as in JOVE . For me this is quite useful and I am frequent visitor of JOVE since last 5-6 years helped me understanding some not mentionable tricks and tips in the text due to space problems in the articles. It is definitely  worth full to publish here in my opinion. Which is also my plan.

I just received the invitation from JOVE for submitting the methodology of my paper. I think it is a great idea to share the experiment protocol with other researchers. I do benefit a lot from the video of other people's work from JOVE.

Lately, I have had several request from JOVE to publish the methods for a particular technique which our lab is experienced in. We have published in JOVE before for other techniques. It seems that it's worth to show a video of the presentation. Only problem is the high cost to publish in JoVE. Yes, I agree that video editing and publishing is costly too. Our lab is not a big one and in Australia we don't get much grants for publications, unfortunately.

It is similar with us. We got an invitation but publishing costs are high. In general, video should boost your visibility but with the impact factor it has additional to very high costs for open access, not sure if it is worh.

Cost is too high - regardless of open access or not. And why would I re-publish a method that I already published in any form, as a part of a paper? Yes, of course its good to visualize in a video so all can understand better and it secures reproducibility - but for some methods videos have been made and are available on Youtube. I mean, you name it - its there. For new methods, it makes sense. Then, still expensive. Also, these days you can rent cheap HD cameras etc.

How much authors have to pay to publish in jove,

I thought JoVE created some new value for science publication. It really help the communication between readers and authors. It can be improved and grown. The impact (not really impact factor) will gain daily I believe. JoVe also added new input on the step by step point with vision. FYI. Thanks!

I'm now in the process of publishing a paper with JoVE.

Apart from the high cost, the real concern now its impact factor. It is absolutely critical for this Journal. JoVE is one of a kind and with lots of potentials. But without an impact factor it will not go very far.

Cost of publishing may be prohibitive.

I have published in JOVE previously. It was a great experience! They sent a professional videographer and producer to my lab and filmed me performing a typical experiment. We negotiated a deal with them to also film a simple distillation the same day, that they would publish and in return wave the publishing fee. I'm hoping the journal starts to take off and the impact factor rises from 1.3! I'm afraid I can not comment on the usefulness of those particular JOVE fields (my university didn't have a subscription to JOVE). I did notice that the chemistry publications were quite interesting and helpful, since you get step-by-step directions and physically see the person performing the experiment.

Our Institution subscribes, and I watched a lot of the Neurobiology videos when writing a grant proposal in a new (for me) area.  I worry less about an impact factor, since I just evaluate the information on the basis of my ability to adapt the technique to my needs.  It is not a place that I look at for the results of a study.  So, I think you have to evaluate your need of a subscription on the basis of whether you need to see a lot of new methods.  Or, whether you have a lot of trainees that might benefit from having ready access to videos of methods.

The lab I am in could not afford to publish there, but I am not sure we use any difficult techniques, so our work would probably not qualify.  As to Srdan's point, I think that with all of the talk about problems with reproducible methods, it is a valuable service to have such an archive..  And I have seen some high-profile labs put their methods videos there, regardless of whether they have already published the method in another form.  To me, it is similar to the Current Protocols series, or Methods in Enzymology.  Judging by the number of questions posted here on RG about methods and the troubleshooting thereof, there seems to be a need for such videos. 

Too bad that it has to be so expensive, but I am not sure that PubMedCentral would have the ability or the resources to set up a similar program.

The journal could be very useful, but cost is the problem.

We are just starting the process with them.  I do not really equate impact factor with quality and dislike having to chase it.  I really believe the video format is ideal for demonstrating methods, and the video will be useful for us to have.

Regarding the cost, most of the open access journals already charge thousands per article (BMC, PLoS, etc.), so their fee is not really out of line.  In fact, given that they send a videographer out and do the editing, you get much more bang for your buck than many other publishers.  

My opinion is very positive. It is possible to follow complicated procedures that could be hard to make following written protocols. In my case I've downloaded two dissections. I do not know about the cost because the fact is that I've got the videos through PubMed, PMC free articles. I can imagine that can discourage the publisher watching the contents distributed for free. Then, for me to get a subscription or not is a matter of the use one expect to make. In the case the use will be extensive makes sense to subscribe to support the Journal, but if the use will be punctual I can hardly imagine this as a must.

I recently received an unsolicited email from Ronald Myers at JoVe  asking that I publish my paper with them. Never mind the fact that my paper had a purely qualitative, policy analysis methodology!

And currently, does JoVE has an impact factor achieved?

According to their site, the impact factor is 1.325.

I am also considering about the possibility of publishing our methods with JoVe. I recently also received an email from Ronald Myers asking that I publish my paper with them. Have to mention our paper has already published in schizophrenia research. Just be concerned about the conflicts of interests between the two journals... But interested in this form of spreading our research

Our experience was very positive. They filmed professionally and peer review was rigorous. I wish they had a higher IF though.

I just received invitation from JoVE and got to know the video method journal for the time. It sounds novel and cool to make the study method visualized and get published. But not sure about the validity of this idea. I found comments on this thread are very helpful for me to learn it.

The current impact factor of the JoVE is 1.184 and its level is Q4.

The cost production is as follows:

Standard: video by JoVE, the cost is 2400 USD and video by author, the cost is 1200 USD.

Open Access: Video by JoVE, the cost is 4200 USD, Video by author, the cost is 3000 USD.

In my opinion, we are in a new phase of the scientific publishing of scientific journals similar in the transfer of traditional libraries to digital libraries, video magazines seem to be moving forward, many of them have good sound like jove has a good Impact factor in Scopus

Ironically, someone from this journal recently contacted me about my philosophy paper.

It is cool to have such a publication.

I was contacted mid-August.. was in holidays of course, but I am giving it a thought. Would it be worth it, considering the IF it has?
