10 Years ago we tested a YSI biochemistry analyser on pichia fermentations and the conclusion was that Methanol determinations where not reliable. Things change and technologies advance, so I was wondering if anyone has had any good experiences since.

Thank you Jorge. Glycerol gave good results with us as well but methanol was problematic, so I'm still wondering if methanol detection is as reliable as for the other analyts.

We perform small and large scale fermentation using VOC sensor (figaro) coupled to a silicone membrane that's permeable to methanol. Carrier gas is air. Calibration is done in-situ. This is a cheap efficient way of measuring methanol and ethanol online. Offline, I would use a GC.
We also have an online methanol detector from frings, that has the same working principle, but the signal is not stable in fermentation broth. In water we do get nice reproducible results but that's of little use to us. Despite that, autoclavation of this sensor only works for SIP, the electronic parts cannot go into an autoclave. Could you give me more details about the detector you are using?
I understand very well as we experienced the same problem years back with the the commercially available sensors. Our engineer decided to design one based on the same principle but with a removable sensor head so that you could very well autoclave it. I could get you the details a little later today. Our results are reliable, we use the probe in a feedback control loop for fed-batch.
