I found a method for spectrophotometric determination of methanol in this paper: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jccs.201000035/abstract

The process is quite simple: mix 100ml 10%(w/v) Sodium nitroprusside, 100ml 10% (w/v) Potassium ferrocyanide and 100 ml 5% (w/v) NaOH. Dillute to 600ml and mix 1/6 with sample. Wait 15 minutes at RT and measure at 481nm.

It sounded too good to be true but I don't get any color reaction, even remotely, at 481nm in any range of methanol concentrations.
