Can anyone help me on knowing the applications where GIS optimization techniques are used? And any idea if I want to find optimum locations for placement of PMUs in electrical network - What are all the data I have to consider??
Hi Sundara, I believe you can utilize some MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) techniques integrated with GIS for your work. There are number of techniques available right from Genetic Algorithm (as answered in prev comment), ANN, Bayesian Networks or in simpler ways using experts' knowledge in AHP or Fuzzy AHP. You have to come up with all factors datasets (such as already established PMUs, elevation, surrounding land use, public places etc. etc.) which might influence the purpose of your "optimization". If you are new to the topic of Spatial Optimization then I recommend that you have a look at 2009 R.L. Church and A.T. Murray. Business Site Selection, Location Analysis and GIS (New York: Wiley). Church and Murray are two of the leading experts in the area of spatial optimization and their book is very approachable for starters. You can also look up their papers if you are looking for more advanced spatial optimization models.
Optimum placement and minimising the number of PMUs and their
distribution (measurement placement) that provides the maximum

Well, as for as GIS is concerned, you may like to see GIS for Enhanced Electric Utility Performance by Bill Meehan. It is a very recent book and is great resource book on the topic. Location and conditions of of utility assets; Emergency mitigation, outages management etc can all be made possible in the GIS framework..
