During my research, I am discovering how several local businesses are displaced due to rising rent as a result of gentrification. However, small businesses and start ups are increasing amongst young professionals to survive the global economy. My goal is to determine what ways that local businesses can remain competitive to gentrified businesses.
For an example: do they find themselves changing prices, services, or products that attracts newcomers. Does local business owners seek to purchase properties. If inner city residents decide to start businesses, what are the percentage that remain successful after 1 year of start up.
it starts and stops with the (their) value offering - do they have a value offering. if you provide value, you can show profit and cover costs. does not help to change the marketing mix on poor value offerings.
I don't think that statistics will help you with this research problem. Gentrification is one kind of Schumpertian creative destruction, but through a place based perspective. It follows that it is an uneven process and time based. It may be more theoretically promising to look at if, and how, existing local businesses adapt; do products change? does how they offer change -smarter looking shops for example.

Thank you Latoya. It may even be possible to compare two places. This could allow you to compare contents and processes. Leo Paul Dana has a paper in ERD which looks at tourism rather than gentrification, but may outline a suitable approach.
