I ask about a many-step reaction

start:0 1 2 ... i ... M finish:M+1

where free energies of the states 1, 2, ..., M are much higher than those of the start state "0" and the finish state "M+1".

I know the steady-state solution of this problem (it is not difficult to solve it on one's own), but I need a REFERENCE to a guy who first solved it! I remember that, long ago, I saw such a reference - this was, it seems, a work of somebody with Polish name the beginning of 1900-s; but that is all that I remember.

So - QUESTION: can somebody help me with the reference?
