In investigating the cause of childhood deafness I come across many cases of children with coagulopathies or changes in coagulation tests. I was wondering if some colleagues also have this experience and what is the possible relationship between persistently altered abnormal coagulation tests and childhood deafness.
Please could you name these coagulopathies, and reasons why the associated deafness was not due to other factors.
In the etiological investigation of sensorineural hearing loss in children who fail universal newborn hearing screening and who have no identifiable risk factors for hearing loss or genetic cause, in our childhood deafness consultation some diagnostic tests are performed: blood tests that include blood count, blood coagulation tests, lipidogram, TSH, connexins 26 and 30, urine tests and ear CT scan to exclude malformative pathology. In some cases we find patients with von Willebrand disease or or persistently high APTT. Although we know that APTT is a nonspecific test, we wonder why there are such a high number of cases in children with sensorineural deafness when compared to age- and sex-matched control subjects.
