A geomagnetic storm (or any additional imposed field) will not directly affect an EM wave and will certainly not shift frequency, etc.  What CAN have an effect are the associated atmospheric changes, e.g. charged particles in the atmosphere, which can change the propagation properties through the charged dielectric.  For example, ionospheric charging changes between day and night altering the ionospheric bounce and penetration of the upper atmosphere.  That said, terrestrial communication like cell phones will see negligible impact from any such effects.  A rain storm (water in the atmosphere) has a much more significant impact on that communication propagation.  On the other hand, satellite communication and long range over-the-horizon terrestrial communication that relies on ionospheric bounce (e.g. HAM radio) can be significantly impacted by upper atmospheric effects.  

Beyond that, the effects of external fields do not alter the fields from the radio communication.  They simply sum with those signals at the receiver, so you may have interference due to the additional noise power from the storm (e.g. when a lightning strike causes static on your radio), but the signal power remains the same.

Its possible.. electric field respond to electric field and the magnetic field to magnetic field only..varying electric field respond to magnetic field and the vice verse..magnetic storm is a sudden bunch of field which definitely cause variety of local electric fields which will produce a huge range em signal with various frequencies and it may resonate with the radio signal..

The atmospheric charging does not cause the disturbance because its uniform through out the atmosphere but the magnetic storm is not an uniform variation but quick magnetic perturbation..nothing but em waves..

The fields due to the storm do not alter the fields from the electromagnetic wave.  They're simply present at the same time.  Thus, the net field at any point in space is simply the superposition of the two (or more) applied fields at any instant in time.  However, the original wave is not altered, and were it to pass the region of the storm, it would emerge the same as though no storm were there (excluding the atmospheric effects mentioned previously which WOULD alter the wave since there's something physical blocking and interacting with the wave).  As an example of the above, imagine taking two flash lights with colored filters (say blue and green) and shining them on a white wall in a dark room.  If you shine only one or the other you'll get just the blue or just the green, but if you shine them both, then where they overlap you get yellow.  Now put a white object in the middle of the room and shine both flashlights so they illuminate the object, but don't overlap on the wall behind.  The object will be yellow, but the spots on the wall will be blue and green.  The light at the object was not "changed" to yellow.  It's just that both the blue and green light were reflected from that object together because they were both passing through that space that the same time.  The EM fields in that space were the sum of the two separate fields, but those waves were not changed.  

There is a special branch of science (one of its name is "magnetobiology") which studies reaction of biological system on very low magnetic field and its variations. One of the most important facts of these studies is existence of specific frequencies when very low magnetic field can result in strong  reaction of biological system. Any large disturbances in the magnetosphere (including magnetic storms) increase probability of existence of such specific frequencies on the Earth.

However, ground-based signatures of EMIC waves, Pc1–Pc2 geomagnetic pulsations, are observed more frequently during the recovery phase. We investigate the association of EMIC waves with various storm phases in case and statistical studies of 22 geomagnetic storms over 1996–2003, with an associated Dst < −30 nT. High-resolution data from the GOES 8, 9, and 10 geosynchronous satellite magnetometers provide information on EMIC wave activity in the 0–1 Hz band over ±3 days with respect to storm onset, defined as commencement of the negative excursion of Dst. Thirteen of 22 storms showed EMIC waves occurring during the main phase. In case studies of two storms, waves were seen with higher intensity in the main phase in one and the recovery phase in the other. Power spectral densities up to 500 nT2 Hz−1 were similar in prestorm, storm, and early recovery phases. Superposed epoch analysis of the 22 storms shows 78% of wave events during the main phase occurred in the He+ band. After storm onset the main phase contributed only 29% of events overall compared to 71% during recovery phase, up to 3 days. Some differences between storms were found to be dependent on the solar wind driver. Plasma plumes or an inflated plasmasphere may contribute to enhancing EMIC wave activity at geosynchronous orbit.

Recent studies have suggested that cold plasma density structures found inside the plasmasphere and plasmaspheric plumes are important for the generation and propagation of EMIC waves. During the CRRES mission, 913 EMIC wave events and 124 geomagnetic storms were identified. In this study we compare the quiet time cold plasma density to the cold plasma density measured during EMIC wave events across different geomagnetic conditions. We found statistically that EMIC waves occurred in regions of enhanced densities. EMIC waves were, on average, not associated with large local negative density gradients.

1] Much current research in magnetospheric physics is directed toward understanding the dramatic variations in relativistic (>1 MeV) electron fluxes that can take place in the Earth's outer zone during magnetic storms. The behavior of outer-zone energetic electrons is partly controlled by the competing mechanisms of acceleration and loss that result from wave-particle interactions, in particular electron gyroresonance with ELF, VLF, and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. Powerful techniques for treating gyroresonant wave-particle interactions are provided by quasi-linear diffusion theory. In this paper, we derive formulae for the quasi-linear (momentum, mixed, and pitch-angle) diffusion coefficients for cyclotron resonance with field-aligned electromagnetic waves of any mode and general spectral density. The formulae are fully exact, expressed in closed analytical form, and easily computable. Our results can therefore be readily used to determine accurate diffusion rates for many forms of wave-particle interaction in the magnetosphere and other space plasmas. We find that momentum diffusion rates for MeV electrons in gyroresonance with VLF chorus can be less than a day in the lower-density regions outside the plasmasphere. The mechanism of stochastic acceleration by VLF chorus could therefore be instrumental in generating relativistic electrons during the recovery phase of a magnetic storm. Pitch-angle diffusion rates of MeV electrons scattered by EMIC waves along the plasmapause can approach the limit of strong diffusion. EMIC wave scattering could hence contribute significantly to electron precipitation loss over the course of a storm. Codes designed to model electron dynamics in the radiation belts need to incorporate, in addition to radial (cross-L) diffusion, resonant diffusion due to electron gyroresonance with ELF, VLF, and EMIC waves. In order to determine the quasi-linear diffusion coefficients for such codes, observational data are required on the power spectral density, spatial distribution, and temporal variation of these wave modes. Currently, only limited wave data sets are available. In addition, problems of numerical instability associated with diffusion codes need to be solved. The development of fully comprehensive models of radiation belt electron dynamics remains a considerable scientific challenge.

I have been following this question right from the first day you posted and reading the discussions. Your topic is complex but requires simultaneous multi-disciplinary research / studies. As has been stated above by other experts, I do not think there is any kind of frequency deviation of EM waves, or for that matter man-made radio communication signals that the geomagnetic storm induces. Yes, it is but true that such geomagnetic storms have adverse effect on the propagation.

Regarding your last paragraph of your recent post and about the UV radiation, you might find some literature but we need some correlation between geomagnetic storms and UV flux in the atmosphere and further we also might need a laboratory study as to how the bees behave in controlled UV exposure. Similarly we might need results about the magnetic fields, both fixed and changing on the behavior and growth / death of bees.

Your question is leading to more areas to probed in connection with biophysics of bees!

Hello Prasanna, thanks very much for the friendly answer. It was more easy now for me to understand it. How could we- and should we- be succesfull in getting started further more research concerning my last questions of possible chaninging UV light and problems for bees??? But if we should have got one day really a result- does it help us really to stop bee dying???? Of course, UV lilght is only one reason for bee dying, but it could explain why the different scientists and countries in the world have so much different opinions. May be really, the main reason in Russia for bee dying is another than in the USA? My head is full of questions and I am not sure if I should continue thinking...Best regards, Eva
