Behavioural and neuropsychological research considers body image distortion (BID) as a multidimensional symptom comprising different dimensions, that seem to have specific neural correlates in AN patients. The most widely accepted components remain the perceptive, the affective, and the cognitive. The perceptive component comprises the identification and estimation of one’s own body and it refers to the accuracy of the individuals’evaluation of their size, shape, and weight relative to their real proportions. The affective component mainly comprises feelings that individuals develop towards their body’s appearance and satisfaction/dissatisfaction of one’s own body. The cognitive component mainly comprises beliefs and schemas concerning body shape and appearance and the mental representation of one’s own body. I’m particularly interested in cognitive processing, especially in metaphorical thinking. Does anyone know literature about this topic? Thanks in advance.
