I want to take some blood samples for subsequent RNA analysis but I can not transfer them immediately to -70 degrees C condition; so, I want to know if I am able to use RNA later for my further RNA studies in my blood samples.

We prefer extracting RNA from fresh blood and did once try to use RNA later on blood samples. The reason we do not prefer that method is, that upon lysis of cells, Hemoglobin is a major pain, and in our case also Hemozoin which not only reduce the quality of the extracted RNA but also inhibit some pcr/qpcr. In the event you cannot transfer blood immediately to -70, then add some RNAse inhibitors and leave the blood samples on ice for maybe a max time of 2hours.

The RNA quality was not the best and it inhibited our pcrs.....and it took us a while before we realized that Hemoglobin, or its degraded counterparts could possibly be interfering. Especially since, one would not expect such material to pass through the RNA extraction columns.

I have not any experiences for preserving blood sample in RNA later, but we used it for preserving salivary glands of sand flies and after more than one year we could extract RNA successfully.

Thank you for sharing your result. Did you preserve the glands alone in RNA later or you preserved whole body of sand flies? Were there any blood fed samples in which you achieved to extract RNA?
