The assessment needs to be applied as part of a multi-center study at baseline and 18-months follow-up; it will be part of a larger battery. Therefore, about 10 minutes of time for assessment are the limit. Thanks for your suggestions.
Thank you Agneta, I have to be more precise: The study investigates early psychosis and early depression. We know that "role functioning" decreases at least in schizophrenia patients, however like to further disentangle the elements of that mostly only generally reported outcome. We like to assess aspects like full/part-time work, subjective satisfaction, relation to highest level before/ potential as given by education.
Hi Stephan, much depends on YOUR definition of functional outcomes. In I|O psychology I use both individual dependent variables (from absenteeism and engament to job satisfaction and job performance), and organisational output measures such as organisational productivity and efficacy. As I am usually interested in a general (overall) evaluation rather than a facets analysis I use few items per construct. Cheers, John (Canada)
The Short Form (36) Health Survey (SF-36) would be a very good standardized tool to use in your study (http://www.rand.org/health/surveys_tools/mos/mos_core_36item.html).
In 1999 we developed the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS) , for the New South Wales Motor Accidents Authority (Australia). It is now the most common instrument used to rate impairment in Australia , and it was incorporated in the US AMA Impairment Assessment Guidelines (6th Edition). Apart from face validity, research remains limited. The paper version is royalty-free. It looks at six areas of function, including Self Care and Personal Hygiene, Recreational Activities, Travel, Social Functioning, Concentration, Persistence and Pace, and Employability.
I agree with Lauri Mccormick that SF-36 would be a good choice. We use it a lot where I work (Institute of Stress Medicine) in order to follow health outcomes related to both funtional limitations and physical limitations in patiets daignosed with stress related disorders including mild depression and anxiety disorders.
i also use since two years sf36 asking the psychotic outpatients and comapring with the opinions of their relatives with WHOQOL-100 . we are doing in this springer the same tests. our patients are all living at their home and not in sheltered houses. it would be of great intrest working in a wider perspective.
