Since first publishing the existence of macromolecules based on monomers (Staudinger 1922) there are roughly known some development cycles p.e. 1930-1940 (PE, PA,..) and 1985-1995 (PPS, PEEK, PSU ....Hoechst High Chem).
Is there anybody known who has summarized all the developments of polymers since 1922 up to now with relation to academic research groups and companies which scaled it up?
Additonal explanation of the intention of the question:
The content of such a review should include the reduction of the very wide variation of materials to some principle rules to structure the the actual fields of polymer materials.
Based on such a "classification" a historical evaluation of research directions and company strategies should give indications why a special polymer field is favorized and why others were not followed up.
This should give the interested reader new approaches to look for material fields which are not known up to now
It might be possible that such a review does not exist, ...or is not known.

a very exaustive book for the early developments of the polymer chemistry is : " Fibers and synthetic polymers" by Rowland Hill , Elsevier 1953: a collection of several contributions by the major experts of those times. For XRD characterization of polymers, the first major contribution was in the book " Chemical crystallography" by C.W.Bunn, Oxford at Clarendon Press 1945. Starting 1954, the italian group leaded by Prof. G.Natta, at Polytechnic of Milan initiated the era of the stereoregular synthetic polymers and you can refer to many review papers on this subject by the Milan school . The most exahustive was by P. Corradini " Chain Conformation and Crystallinity" in the Book "Stereoichemistry of macromolecules", by A.D.Ketley, M.Dekker, NY, 1968, vol 3,pag 1.

many thanks for the "historical" references. They seem to be a good basis to understand the Innovation processes at that time. Do you also know some actual references, with review charakter, which include the high temperature thermoplastic polymers from the 80ths and following decades.....?

the high temperature thermoplastic polymers field is very wide and for each material you can find good books. Therefore , according to your needs, I suggest to apply key words to find online books, like : Liquid Crystal Polymers, Polyimides,Polyketones, Polysulfones.
A general very accurate Polymer Handbook is the second Edition of the Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Engineering by H.F. Mark , 1985 Wiley.

Understanding Materials Science: History, Properties, Applications, Second Edition
by Rolf E. Hummel
It is a book looking at Materials science with an historical perspective. There is a section on polymers. Also the book is fairly resent.
I do know the author very well (he was my PhD advisor) and he will gladly answer any questions you have.

These books are excellent books to learn about polymers. I used then for years to prepare my lectures in macromolecular chemistry

thanks for your literature information about the "history" of polymers in building construction. For my opinion this field of application in future will increase remarkeable. This might initiate new polymer systems adapted to lightweight construction in archtitecture. The use of reinforcement by high performance fibres will be essential to achieve the statical requirements.
