Dear Rengert, I did it as byproduct and experiment during 3D documentation of microscopic archaeological wood and charcoal. We use 3D system of Nikon optical microscope, but only with small part of coin surface. It looks nice, but it is too time consuming. We tested also digital microscope: it is optimal and quick way. But again: we tested it as byproduct of depicturing of an archaeobotanical objects.

Dear Jaromir, that does sound very interesting, I am familiar with the possibilities of Nikon binoculars. Have the results been published, or will they be published in the near future?

it is not published, but i am thinking about publication this year. It is only set of attempts. We use classic optical microscope at the moment (send me yours email for details, please, at [email protected]) with special software. Products are anaglyfs (red-cyan glasses necessary). Jaromir

Hallo Rengert, im Zuge des bronzezeitlichen Gessler Goldschatzes hab ich einige Erfahrungen mit dem Scannen hochreflektierender Oberflächen gesammelt. Es stellt immer noch eine technische Hürde da. In den vielen Versuchen die wir durchgeführt haben gilt für komplexe Strukturen, dass Vorgehen mit einem hochauflösendem CT als unabdinglich. Für einfache Dinge wie Münzen (mit reflektierenden Oberflächen)  hab ich die besten Erfahrungen mit der Firma ....... gemacht, die nicht nur gute eigene Hand- und Stationsscanner haben, sondern auch über ein Partnerfeld verfügen, das über ein beachtliches Know How verfügt. 

Des weiteren kann ich die Firma von .......und...............empfehlen.

Falls dies in der Öffentlichkeit zu lesen ist, weise ich ausdrücklich darauf hin, dass es sich hier um Erfahrensberichte, keine Werbung handelt, deshalb hab ich die Namen dann doch wieder rausgenommen .

I am currently working on a project where we have been looking at the possibility of 3D scanning some artefacts and adding them to a website (see http://architectureandasceticism.exeter.ac.uk but be aware that it is still under construction and by no means finished!) as part of our online resource. We had tried scanning some reproduction metal pilgrimage tokens (very much like coins in size) but it was not successful as they were too reflective and the team is only just beginning to train up on the equipment. After gaining permission from the British Museum my Postdoctoral researcher and an IT team from the University of Exeter tried scanning clay tokens, but again failed as the software did not seem able to pick up such small details. It has been suggested that it might be worth trying to use any data captured and model it with high resolution photographs. We are currently waiting for the IT technicians to let us know what (if anything) can be done as a next step.

Dear Rengert,

I have done some 3D scanning of Himyarite South Arabian coins (Breukmann scanner). The reflections are the main problem. I would not want to do individual coins which would take an enormous amount of time. I still prefer photos. They are far cheaper. For the exceptional coin perhaps. Ultimately it is a cost-effectiveness question. For which question do you need 3D data?

Dear Bernd, dear Emma, thanks for your insights. We'll be using a Aicon scanner with a bleu LED-Unit, which should give us a resolution of 50 microns or better. As the surfaces of the Roman coins are not very shiny, this should work quite well. I'll keep you posted on the results.

Dear Paul,

thank you for your reaction, which must have come in while I was writing my previous reply. As I already said, reflection won't be much of a problem, as far as I have seen the coins. We are looking at countermarks on Roman copper asses. As we will specifically looking at the wear of one individual countermarking stamp, we hope to get more information using 3D-scans than photos or traditional plaster casts, as we can directly compare the models generate with the scans. Has your work on the use of the Breuckmann scanner been published?

The coin scans were only tests from Breukmann itself. I started to publish with photos but did not finish. I opted for individual photos. Only the following study of my planned corpus of Old South Arabian Coins appeared:

Dear Rengert, I did some simple experiments with visualization of coins and their details using anaglyphs (and some other techniques). I have demonstrated the use of common scanner, digital camera and microscope. I know it's not real 3D, but the advantage is low cost and easiness of performance. Another advantage is also the possibility of presentation with a common printing in books or journals. Best regards, Lukas.
