I recently got the news about the new technology which will help legally blind to see. It is non-invasive. Just like electronic glasses. Anyone has any kind of experience with that?
Ive had a play with the device and I know of one patient who is also a Rehab Worker who uses the device. Over here in the UK there is some research ongoing - best person to contact is the company providing the units - Stuart Baldwin from Associated Optical. He may be ablate point you in the right direction. Anecdotally the device is the only HMD I've come across with such positive feedback from end users.
I just had a middle school student try this device! I was not at the appointment but his report to me was that eSight was not a good fit for him--literally and figuratively. They were not a good fit to his head, and because he has nystagmus, the device didn't focus particularly well for him. In all fairness, his mother told me that the company informed her before the appointment that they not be the best device for this particular student, but the family just wanted to try and see what they were like. I had another student a while ago who told me that her grandmother (who has MD) got the device and loved it. So I would say that much depends on the particular eye condition, and that the device is more suitable for adults than children right now. The other caveat is that currently the device is very, very expensive. But it seems to be promising technology and it will be interesting to see what happens with it in the future. I hope they continue doing more research to refine the device, make it smaller and more affordable.
