I am researching effective design of mobile apps, particularly helping students of Japanese memorize kanji characters. Can anyone recommend some great mobile apps? Or, if you wouldn't characterize any apps as great, can you give me suggestions as to what you would love to see in a mobile app?
Maybe you should have a look at an app called "Repetitions" (https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/repetitions-for-iphone-ipod/id332352818?mt=8 for iPhone or https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/repetitions-hd-for-ipad/id380252811?mt=8 for iPad). This is based on the same algorithm I use in my current research project and that is used in the well known SuperMemo project.
I think the dictionary app "Imiwa?" is great. Besides the dictionary function it gives details on kanji and shows alternative writings and examples.

It would be great though if one could also get information on the nuances of different kanji with the same basic meaning (e.g. 聞く、聴く and 訊く, etc.)
I currently own an Android Software and studying Japanese so I mostly use japanese Apps in order to find an effective and enjoyable way to memorize Kanji and grammar.
As italian student is difficult to find freindly-user translated grammar books or Apps.
I find that the main problems is the Grafic Interface and subject organization:
Mostly programs and manuals in general lack of a structure which can easily classify the many aspects of language and tend to be confusing. The lack in structure is also a problem that compromise a quick learning. Color theory should be considered in learning.
